Dates shift by a day either way depending on the year and your time zone, because the signs are tied to the sun's position rather than to the calendar. If your birthday falls on the boundary, the sign depends on the exact time and place you were born.

How this list was built

This page describes a tradition; it does not endorse it. Astrology has been tested repeatedly and does not predict personality or events. That does not make the system uninteresting — it is a two-thousand-year-old scheme that shaped calendars, language and art — but a page that presents it as fact would be misleading, so this one presents it as what it is.

The signs no longer line up with the constellations. The dates were fixed around two thousand years ago, and the Earth's axis has wobbled since. The sun now enters each constellation roughly a month later than the sign that carries its name, so most people born under one sign had the sun in the constellation before it. Astrologers know this; the western system is tied to the seasons, not to the stars.

Ophiuchus is a real constellation but not a thirteenth sign. The sun does pass through it, between Scorpius and Sagittarius. It is left out of the zodiac because the scheme divides the year into twelve equal parts and always has, not because anyone is hiding it. The story resurfaces every few years as news; it is not new and nothing changes.

Two rulers are given for three signs, and both are traditional. Before telescopes, the seven visible bodies ruled the twelve signs. When Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were discovered they were assigned to Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces. Both schemes are in use, so both are named rather than picking one silently.

Sources. Dates, elements, qualities, rulers and symbols are the standard western tropical zodiac as it is set out in reference works. The astronomical points — precession, the constellation boundaries, Ophiuchus — are matters of fact and are stated as such.

Common questions

What are the twelve zodiac signs in order?

Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. The order starts at the northern spring equinox, which is why Aries begins around 21 March.

Why do the dates vary by a day?

Because the signs follow the sun's position, and the calendar and the solar year do not divide evenly. The sun crosses into each sign at a specific moment, which can fall on either side of midnight depending on your time zone.

Is Ophiuchus a zodiac sign?

No. It is a constellation the sun passes through, but the zodiac divides the year into twelve equal parts and always has. Nothing was hidden and nothing has changed.

Does astrology work?

No — it has been tested many times and does not predict personality or events. This page is here for the system itself, which is worth knowing about as history and as language, and it says plainly what the evidence shows.
