Routes in are the common path, not the only one. Titles, licensing and training vary between countries — a job needing a licence in one place may need none in another — so the route column describes the shape of the requirement rather than naming a specific national qualification.
How this list was built
No salary column. Pay differs by country, by city, by employer and by year, and any figure printed on a page like this is wrong for most readers on the day they read it. Leaving it out is more honest than a number with four caveats attached.
The route in is the column that matters. Most job lists give you a title and nothing else. Knowing that an electrician does an apprenticeship, an actuary faces years of exams, and a web developer may be entirely self-taught is the difference between a list and something useful.
Trades, care and manual work are here in force. Lists like this skew towards office and professional jobs because that is what the people writing them do. Plumbers, welders, farriers, care workers, drivers, cleaners and warehouse staff are a large share of every real economy, and they are on this list in proportion.
Nothing invented, nothing aspirational. Every entry is a job people actually hold and are actually paid for. No made-up future titles, no job-board euphemisms, and no roles that exist mainly in a few large companies.
Common questions
How many jobs does this pick from?
172, across health, education, trades, land work, food, technology, engineering, business, law and order, transport, media, the arts, science, public service and personal services.
Can I use it to find a career?
Use it to widen the field, not to decide. The route column is the useful one: it shows quickly which jobs need a long qualification, which need an apprenticeship and which you can start with training on the job.
Why is there no salary?
Because it would be wrong for most readers. Pay for the same job varies several-fold between countries and cities and moves every year; a static page cannot carry it honestly.
Is this list for one country?
No. The jobs exist across the English-speaking world, and the route column describes the kind of requirement rather than a specific national qualification, because licensing rules differ.
