Founding years are the year the franchise began, often under another name or in another city — the Dodgers date from Brooklyn in 1883, the Giants from New York. The Athletics are listed by their current temporary home while their permanent move is completed; this row is updated when it is.

How this list was built

Team names belong to the clubs and the league. They are listed here as facts, the way a reference book lists them, with no logos and no colours. The line between a reference and a knock-off is that a reference draws nothing it does not own.

Stadium names are left out on purpose. They carry sponsors' names and change every few years; the city does not.

Two leagues, three divisions each, five teams each. Thirty since 1998. Relocations are rare but happen — one is in progress — and this page carries the current home and says so where it is temporary.

The filters make it a tool rather than a list. Pick from one division for a mini-bracket or one league for a draft; the count under the button shows the size of the pool before you press.

Sources. Team names, home venues, league and division alignment and founding years are matters of public record as maintained by the league. Names and marks are the property of Major League Baseball and its member clubs and are used here only to identify the teams.

Common questions

How many MLB teams are there?

30, split evenly between the American and National Leagues, each with an East, Central and West division of five teams. That structure has held since 1998.

Why is there no stadium column?

Because stadium names are sold to sponsors and change often. The city or borough the stadium is in does not, so that is what is listed.

Can I pick from one league only?

Yes — set the league or division dropdown and the count shows how many teams are in the pool.

Why are there no logos?

They belong to the clubs. A reference list does not need them and should not use them.
