Kinds are the plain ones — person, place, thing, animal, food, nature, idea, group, creature — rather than grammatical categories. 'Idea' covers abstract nouns: courage, silence, luck, time. Every sentence is original and written to be read aloud.

How this list was built

Common words, not rare ones. A noun generator full of 'ziggurat' and 'sycophant' is a vocabulary test, not a writing tool. Everything here is a word a ten-year-old knows and a novelist still uses, which is what prompts, games and language teaching actually need.

Every noun comes with a sentence, and the sentences are the work. 'The bell rang twice and stopped' shows the word, its rhythm and a small story. Dictionary examples — 'a bell is an instrument' — show nothing. The sentences are written to be read aloud, which is how most people use a page like this.

Kinds are for filtering, and they are plain English. Person, place, thing, animal, food, nature, idea. A teacher who wants abstract nouns filters to Idea; a game that wants things you can draw filters to Thing. Grammatical labels would be more precise and less useful.

Concrete outnumbers abstract on purpose. Most nouns in ordinary speech are concrete, and most uses of a random noun — a drawing prompt, a story seed, a word game — want something you can picture. The abstract ones are here in proportion, not padded.

Yes. Every one was written to be read aloud to any age, with nothing violent, crude or frightening.

Why are there no proper nouns?

Because a proper noun is a name, and names are on the name generator. This list is common nouns only — the words that take 'a' and 'the'.
