How this list was built
'Theme' means five different things, and this page keeps them apart. A party theme is decoration and a dress code. A writing theme is an idea a story is about. A design theme is a visual language. A classroom theme is a topic to teach across subjects. A photography theme is a constraint for a project. Most theme generators mix them, so half of what they give you is useless for whatever you came for. The filter fixes that.
One idea to start, every time. 'Under the sea' is not a plan. 'Blue and green everything, paper fish, a treasure chest for the presents' is a plan you can begin this afternoon. The idea column is the difference between a word and a theme.
No franchises. Superheroes and pirates are here as themes because they are older than any film. No party theme on this list is a brand, a character or a property somebody owns, which also means nothing here dates.
Writing themes are ideas, not plots. 'A promise kept too long' can be a romance, a thriller or a comedy. That is the point of a theme as opposed to a prompt: it tells you what the story is about without telling you what happens.
Common questions
How many themes does this pick from?
120, across parties, writing, design, classrooms and photography. All of them are in the table on this page with their starting idea.
Can I get party themes only?
Yes — set the dropdown to Party and the count under the button shows how many are in the pool. The same works for writing, design, classroom and photography.
What is the difference between a theme and a prompt?
A prompt tells you what to make; a theme tells you what it is about or how it should feel. 'Draw a bicycle' is a prompt. 'Motion' is a theme, and the bicycle is one of a hundred ways to do it.
Why is the same theme listed twice?
Because it works for two different purposes and the starting idea is different for each. Space as a party is star lights on a black ceiling; Space as a classroom topic is the solar system and what lies beyond it.
